The rise of DSP’s and social media has led to widespread claims that popular music structure must adapt in order to succeed. Artists are increasingly encouraged to introduce hooks within the first 10 to 15 seconds, shorten song length, and minimise intros to maintain engagement and reduce skip rates. These practices are often linked to algorithmic behaviour and short-form platforms such as TikTok.
This has created an industry assumption that traditional songwriting structures are no longer effective. Therefore, this research investigates whether popular song structures actually need to change in order to succeed within DSPs and social media environments.
The initial hypothesis proposed that streaming platforms encourage structural change, meaning shorter songs with earlier hooks are more likely to succeed.
For the methodology, this study adopts a qualitative research design combining literature review, historical analysis, and observational analysis of streaming behaviour. Comparative analysis was used to examine structural differences across decades, while observational analysis was used to evaluate listener behaviour and industry data.
However, a limitation of this approach is its reliance on secondary data, meaning listener motivations and individual preferences cannot be directly measured.
Diving into DSPs, Algorithms and music discovery, streaming platforms analyse engagement through metrics such as skip rates and completion rates. Montecchio, Roy and Pachet (2019) demonstrate that skipping behaviour aligns with structural transitions, with the first 30 seconds showing the highest skip rates. This helps explain the industry shift toward earlier hooks.
However, the study focuses on behavioural patterns rather than listener intention. While it shows how DSPs interpret engagement, it does not prove that structural change is required for success.
Similarly, Aguiar and Waldfogel (2018) show that playlist placement significantly increases streams, highlighting the role of DSPs as gatekeepers of music discovery. However, their research primarily measures exposure rather than long-term listener engagement, limiting its ability to explain sustained success.

Together, these studies suggest that DSPs shape visibility, but not necessarily the structural requirements of successful songs.
Moving into song structure and historical context; historical analysis shows that song structures evolve gradually. While the streaming era has introduced shorter songs and earlier hooks, core structures such as the verse, pre-chorus, and chorus format remain consistent.

Bennett (2011) supports this, arguing that popular songwriting relies on stable structural conventions shaped through collaborative practice. However, this study is based on qualitative observation within studio environments, meaning its findings may not fully reflect large-scale listener behaviour.
Nevertheless, it provides strong evidence that structural change is typically incremental rather than radical.
Examining streaming behaviour and the Catalog Paradox allowed the understanding of how streaming now dominates music consumption in the UK, accounting for 87.7 percent of total listening, with nearly 200 billion annual streams. However, approximately 70 to 73 percent of streams come from catalog music (Luminate, 2024; CMA, 2022).
This “catalog dominance effect” suggests that listeners frequently engage with older music, much of which was written before streaming platforms existed.
A limitation of this data is that it does not distinguish between active discovery and passive listening, such as playlist autoplay. However, it still demonstrates that structurally traditional songs remain highly relevant within modern consumption patterns.
Overall, the findings highlight a distinction between discovery and consumption. DSPs and social media influence how music is discovered, but listener behaviour remains rooted in familiarity and repeated listening.
This challenges the assumption that structural optimisation is necessary for success. While platforms may encourage certain compositional strategies, they do not override long-term listener preferences.
To conclude, streaming platforms and social media have transformed music distribution and discovery. However, listener behaviour, particularly the dominance of catalog music, indicates that traditional song structures remain effective.
Therefore, while streaming may encourage minor structural adaptations, it does not require fundamental changes to songwriting. Instead, long-term success appears to be driven by sustained listener engagement rather than structural optimisation alone.
